Creating my Golden Bear Belt – Leather works *

Golden Bear Belts – Leather Works Course – Build A Belt!

This is a post I’m excited to share with you, It’s a little different to my normal posts.. I made my very own (from scratch) hand-made, bespoke leather belt. As well as learning all of the leather works techniques and information a long the way! The course was held by Louise Middleton – Founder of Golden Bear Belts at her studio in North Devon.

Louise’s studio is fabulous! It’s filled with all things; leather, fabrics, textures, tools it’s a wonderland for all creatives and fashionistas.

We had a introduction at the start of the day to let us no what we’ll be doing and all the need to no info. We then began our course by choosing our leather, we had two different leathers to choose from, tan or dark and then cut and measured to size – Louise sources all leather locally and uses the tools they would have used when leather works first began!

We then chose Buckles and stamps and we could choose from a selection of rivets which further down the line would bring the belt together.

Below are the stamps and rivets I chose at the beginning and the press process that transfers the stamps by pressing it into the leather. I spent a good amount of time placing and deciding on were I wanted all my detail to go, the day was so lovely and chilled no rushing so you could really take your time.

I chose to add a hidden message on the inside of my belt, I went for a wolf with the quote Lupus underneath. My sir name is Lovell with the meaning of Lupus “Wolf” The hidden messages are a lovely idea if you’re gifting some one a belt and wanted to add a personal message inside of the belt. Or if you have children and wanted to create a belt for them you can add their name and contact details on the inner side of their belt – It’s such a good idea!!

After adding all detail punching wholes/adding rivets checking everything is in line and fits together, Louise always gives the belts a coating of a wax to soften the leather and insure the lather is treated and ready to send of.

I chose to keep my belt very simple but I’m totally in love with my “simple” hand-made bespoke leather belt! I would recommend any one that would love to try leather works, any creatives, fashionistas, or any one that’s interested in making their own belt. Louise has worked with and made belts for some of the best – Sienna Miller, Chrissy Hyde, Liberty Ross, Chris Martin, Submarina, No added sugar and Tucker NYC. She’s sold belts in Liberty London and been featured in Vogue and Gratzia mag! To top it of she has also taught her leather works skills at Plymouth and West Dean University’s. You really are in the best hands!
